So, for you potential builders, how much did this cost? As my last bit of advice, I'll give you my final listing of prices for everything I got:
Thermaltake LANBOX Lite Windowless- $100
ASUS P5B-VM LGA 775 Motherboard- $114.99
HIPER HPU 580W Power supply (silver)- $99.99
GeIL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM- $100.99
- VANTEC Stealth 80mm Fans- $17.97 (for three)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600- $225.90
- Arctic Silver 5 Compound- $5.99
- Thermaltake Blue Orb II- $45.99
Pioneer 18X DVD+-R DVD Burner- $32.99
- VANTEC Clear 18" ATA cable- $6.49
SAMSUNG Spinpoint 500GB HDD- $119.99
XFX GeForce 7950GT 512MB Fanless (No longer sold)- $249.99
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.10 $28.99
ATI PCI Interface TV Wonder Card- $119.99
The total? Approximately $1350, including tax, shipping, and other fun things. That's not bad at all- it's a perfect example of why you should build on your own, if you have the time and ability. Building on your own is certainly risky and can cost a lot of money- but the benefits are always better than if you hadn't at all. It's cheaper, you use better parts overall, and you KNOW your system- something that other people can't honestly say.
But hey, who am I to say such things? Let's compare Dell's flagship XPS line with my system. You know. Just for fun.
For $2200, you can get the following Dell XPS system!-
DELL XPS “Take Command”-
Core 2 Duo E6320- 1.86MHz
Windows Vista
256 nVidia Geforce 8600
2GB Dual Channel Memory
320GB HDD
16x CD/DVD burner
And, of course, an “off brand” power supply, motherboard, cooling system, fans, and everything else. In a huge tower, making lots of noise. Oh, but they'll give you six moths of McAfee, if you're willing to pay the $900 difference... and obviously, the loss of sheer power.
I think we now know why Dell is doing poorly this year. Go SFF. Your e-penis will grow!
