Sony to possibly push back PS3 release date
Consumer electronics giant Sony has said that the launch of its PlayStation 3 games console could be pushed back.Sony has not yet announced a firm date but said last night that it remained committed to a spring timetable. The company did however admit that the console could be delayed while it awaits a decision on certain specifications. This is thought to relate to the copyright protection system that the built-in Blu-ray DVD drive will use.Reports last week suggested that these same delays could force Toshiba to put back the launch of its next generation DVDs, which despite using different technology to Blu-ray, will use the same copyright protection system.Sony's PS3 is one of the most hotly-anticipated consumer products for a generation, with details of the new offering still thin on the ground. It will compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360, which came to market at the end of last year.News of the possible delay hit Sony's shares during early trading this morning.
