Worldwide Web Games to Air on GSN

Next time your Mom tells you you?ll never make any money playing video games, tell her to watch the upcoming broadcast of The Worldwide Webgames Championship. The top scoring player takes home a grand prize of- seriously- one million dollars, a first in a competition oriented around casual games that include hot titles like Bejeweled 2, Zuma and Solitaire. Now, bored housewives, ambivalent secretaries and distracted security guards everywhere can dream of being millionaires.

69 players in seven countries and 22 U.S. states qualified to compete by participating in online tournaments at FUN Technologies? casual game sites, WorldWinner and SkillJam, or at any of FUN?s partner sites including GSN.com, MSN Games, Real Networks and Virgin Games. Finalists were flown Los Angeles to demonstrate dominance at the three popular games- the million-dollar prize went to the last player standing after three rounds of competition and elimination.

Kavitha Yalavarthi, an aspiring law student and honors graduate from Odessa, TX, was the champion. She claims to have honed her skills by challenging her mother (or yours?) online. She plans to use her winnings to purchase her first home with her fianc?, who accompanied her to the competition.

In addition to the casual games championship, hosted by Todd Newton, the special will also feature highlights of a special celebrity competition MC'd by Emmy Award-winner Chuck Woolery. Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, Adrienne Curry, Tracey Gold, Linda Blair and Linda Grey played the online LINGO skill game, competing against one another for their favorite charities.
The competition will be broadcast Sunday, December 3 at 9:00 PM EST on the GSN Network. Considering GSN?s owned by Sony, maybe next time they?ll hold a competition with games that are actually cool. More in The Business Browse all News
