  • The Real 8.8 - Worth getting a PS3 for?

  • Author: Curtis
  • The short answer is yes. The longer answer is yes, assuming you're as impatient as me when it comes to waiting for the 360 version (Even though the 360 will be based on a newer version of the game, C instead of the PS3's B, and will feature online play). Either way, make sure you buy a couple of sticks and have at least one other player willing to practise and battle with you. There is no point in playing this game with the SixAxiS, and there is no point fighting the AI. The game is meant for two players battling with arcade sticks.

You can still have a laugh with the pad, breezing through arcade mode or quest mode, where you fight AI players in arcades to win money and items (To customise your character's appearance), as well as being able to compete in tournaments, but you will be missing out.

See, everyone knows the point of fighting games is competition. Beating a computer player is an empty experience, and losing to one can only teach you so much. Having another person to duel is a thrilling experience, even at the low level most of us play at. The game gives you a rich variety of moves and tactics, and demands strict timing and split-second reflexes.

It really doesn't take long before you have a decent understanding of the game mechanics and the characters you play with and against, and it is very rewarding to notice yourself continually adapt and advance as your regular opponents do the same. Before long, you will be enjoying lightning fast, graceful, intense duels.

Another great Virtua Fighter game, then. If you liked any of the others, you'll like this. If you don't like fighting games, or simply don't like the VF games, you're missing out. Why not give this one a go? It's a good introduction to the series (Although VF4:Evo is perhaps better fitted to this purpose due to its extensive training features) and you really only need to pick up some of the basics to begin having lots of fun, despite the great depth of gameplay that is there for you to explore as you progress.
